I might be far from home at this point (and having an awesome time!) but there are plenty of cities close by Antwerp that are worth visiting. Amsterdam? AmsterDAMN!! Anoek has lived there for over ten years, and knows where to find all the good stuff (restaurants, coffee and all that, you know what I mean...). What are your favorites in Amsterdam? Let me know! But first let's see what Anoek is all about.

Favorite quote “We have to be honest about what we want and take risks rather than lie to ourselves and make excuses to stay in our comfort zone” ― Roy Bennett
“I’ve lived here since …” November 2004
“I came here because of …” My university studies.
“Taty and I know each other from …” A mutual friend, we met in LA!
“When family/friends come to visit, I always take them to … first” Café Cook or Brouwerij Troost Westergas. At Troost they brew their own beer, and you can get a tour of the brewery there on the spot.
“If I want to have an amazing breakfast/lunch/dinner, I go to …” Breakfast: Teds, good food and mimosas on the weekends. Brunch/lunch ànd dinner: Meneer de Wit heeft honger. Dinner: Maz Mez, Middle Eastern cuisine, don’t let the interior fool you, it’s SO good. Dinner (high end): Fa. Speijkervet, Rijsel, Toscanini, Café Modern.
“When the night is young, I go to …” Brouwerij Troost Westergas, for the late beer nights.
“My morning routine consists of …” Shower, coffee, breakfast, feed the cats.
“I like the locals more than Belgians because …” Hmmm, the Dutch are more direct and are easier to small talk with. It can be a little tough to connect with the Belgians sometimes.
“I like Belgians more than the locals because …” All bars are open late! I like their accent and I feel they’re more polite and less rude than the Dutch.
“If there’s one thing that frustrates me here, it’s …” THE TOURISTS ON THE RENTAL BIKES. Yes, I had to put that in caps lock. I vote for a bike license before you can rent a bike. Also, tourists who walk on the bike path are a pain in the ass.
“I get inspired here by …” People, stories, stores, new projects.. So much happens here, and I love seeing what kind of creative projects people put out there.
“Since I live here, I’ve changed my mind about …” Rotterdam, strangely enough. I couldn’t wait to get out of there, I just had to go to Amsterdam. And ever since I've lived here, I’ve begun to appreciate Rotterdam more and more.
“If I could go back in time, I would go grab a … with …“ Tough question. In any case someone who could tell a lot about Amsterdam and the way it used to look like. I would have a coffee with him/her at the ‘Overtoom’ (Friday Next for example). Writer and poet Joost Van den Vondel would be a good one, he could tell me about what it was like when the Overtoom was just water (now it’s a street with cars/trams, stores and apartments), and what it was like to live back then. After coffee I could take him to the Vondelpark, which is named after him.
“The one thing I’d like to accomplish still, is …” Write a book.
More tips? If you are capable enough to ride a bike.. rent a bike in Amsterdam and leave the centre behind. Go to Amsterdam North, West, East, go from bar to bar and visit the many hip pop-up stores.
